SYNOPSIS: Al Pacino stars as Tony Montana, an exiled Cuban criminal who goes to work for Miami drug lord Robert Loggia. Montana rises to the top of Florida's crime chain, appropriating Loggia's cokehead mistress (Michelle Pfeiffer) in the process. Howard Hawks' "X Marks the Spot" motif in depicting the story line's many murders is dispensed with in the 1983 Scarface; instead, we are inundated with blood by the bucketful, especially in the now-infamous buzz saw scene. One carry-over from the original Scarface is Tony Montana's incestuous yearnings for his sister Gina (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio). The screenplay for the 1983 Scarface was written by Oliver Stone. Sixteen years after Francis Ford Coppola won his second Oscar for The Godfather II (his first was for the 1972 Godfather), the director and star Al Pacino attempted to revive the concept one more time. Despite an elaborate plot that involves Michael Corleone seeking redemption through the Vatican while simultaneously preparing his nephew (Andy Garcia) to take over the Corleone family, the film fails to take shape as a truly meaningful experience in the way the preceding movies do. Still, Pacino is very moving as an elder Michael, filled with regret and trying hard to make amends with his wife (Diane Keaton) and grown children (one of whom is played, and not all that well, by the director's daughter, Sofia Coppola). --Tom Keogh

Hell's Heroes / Three Godfathers (Two-Disc Combo) Review

Western fans have saddled up often with these desperados. At least 5 versions - tales of grim men sacrificing their own well-being for the safety of an infant they find while on the lam from a bank heist - have come to the screen. The gritty Hell's Heroes (with Charles Bickford, Raymond Hatton and Fred Kohler, directed by William Wyler), says Leonard Maltin's Classic Movie Guide, "is probably the most satisfying and certainly the least sentimental" of the versions. Three Godfathers (with Chester Morris, Walter Brennan and Lewis Stone, directed by Richard Boleslawski) adds touches of humor to the early pre-heist scenes before settling into the tale's profound power and is described by the Guide as "little-seen and underrated." See it. For this movie and for these six tough hombres, redemption is nigh.
